SenseCam research in the Sunday Times
SenseCams, created by Microsoft, are wearable cameras which are used to create comprehensive video diaries of a person’s life known as life logs. CLARITY researcher Dr Aiden Doherty, has been involved with many SenseCam research projects over the years, most recently with a project in association with researcher Gillian O’Loughlin from the school of Human Health and Performance at DCU. In this project a number of elite GAA athletes, have been fitted with the SenseCam and were asked to keep a food diary. The diary and the photos amassed from the SenseCam were compared to see if the athletes were accurately describing their calorific intake. The complete article can be read here.
Gillian would like to add that SenseCam and other food recognition technologies cannot replace the skills of a trained professional which are still required to interpret the data. These technologies enhance the work of dietitian's allowing them to 'work smarter' in devising individualised dietary regimens to enhance performance.
Aiden is funded by that the Irish Health Research Board, under grant number MCPD/2010/12.
