Senior Research Scientists on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems for Energy Efficient Buildings

Position Summary

Applications are invited from both software developers and senior scientists. The candidate should have a demonstrable strong knowledge of programming database/web services, embedded networked systems and/or sensor networks.
The project has strong market potential and will focus on market-driven sensor networking solutions for energy monitoring, activity recognition and device actuation in buildings. The position is associated to 2 projects in collaboration with Philips NL, CSTB FR (Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment), G.E.M. Team Solutions GE, and Episensor, IE. CLARITY has a main role within this project of data collection, processing and decision-making support.

Duties

The aim is to develop a sensor network-based energy auditing and control tool for buildings. The user will be able to monitor and control energy (consumption/production) from the WEB via a range of wireless sensor units (e.g. ZigBee of TinyOS) equipped with a radio unit and several sensors (motion detection, temperature, electrical meters) and control devices. According to candidate skills, the main responsibilities are (1) Embedded software development for data acquisition; (2) Database management, data processing and web services. Publishing the work and writing periodical technical reporting are required.

Applicant Profile

We are looking for proven top software engineers with a passion for software development, creating innovative market-driven solutions and self-motivation.
Requirements are: strong knowledge on at least 3 of the following: (1) embedded sensor system programming; (2) SQL database development; (3) signal processing; (4) Web services and servlet management; (5) Dynamic web applications development (Java, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, AJAX).
Candidate should demonstrate excellent English writing/oral skills (mother tongue, certified or that can show a portfolio of publications).
A knowledge of the physical communication layer and Matlab is advantageous.
The candidate must have at least 4 years industry or academic experience. A PhD in electronic, telecommunication or software engineering is considered as academic experience.

Position details and compensation

The starting date has some level of flexibility between (1 February and 1 April 2010) and will be agreed with the applicant. The duration of the contract is 2 years. After the initial first 6-months, the position will be revisioned according to work achievement. Beside software development the researcher will gradually gain supervision responsabilities. During the 2nd year, the employee will advance his/her career by gaining supervision responsabilities within the group. Successfull candidates will be paid a gross salary in betwen €40K to €55K yearly (corresponding to €27K to €37K Net) according to past experience and curriculum.
