Dr Brian Caulfield
Brian Caulfield is a senior lecturer and deputy head of school in the School of Physiotherapy & Performance Science at University College Dublin. His research team includes 5 PhD students, 4 MSc students, 4 research assistants and 1 post doc. He has published 25 papers in peer reviewed journals and over 30 conference papers and serves as an editor for many international journals in his field.
He was previously the Editor of Physiotherapy Ireland and is currently a member of the editorial board of Journal of Sport Rehabilitation. Dr Caulfield’s research interests fall within the areas of motor control and exploitation of technology to advance rehabilitation science in the medical field. He has established strong links with a ranfe of clinical areas and sporting organisations (to elite level) in Ireland and abroad.
His early work focused on the role of disordered motor control in the development of soft tissue injuries (such as ankle and knee sprains) and investigation into the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions for these injuries. In 2006 he served as the conference chair for the 3rd International Ankle Symposium in Dublin and is a committee member for the International Ankle Consortium, a group of international experts that make recommendations for research and rehabilitation in this area.
More recently the focus of his work has moved towards the integration of sensor and computer technology to develop novel methods of motion and physiological analysis and therapies for medicine and sports performance enhancement, including the development of novel methodologies for electrical stimulation of muscle.
He is currently working on the development of a wearable motion analysis system for use in exercise therapy feedback and training. He has attracted funding of over 1m euro as a PI in the past 3 years from grant agencies such as Enterprise Ireland, Higher Education Authority and industrial partners and his research has resulted in patent filings.
